Center Theatre movie screenings to benefit Ukraine relief

DOVER-FOXCROFT – The Center Theatre in Dover-Foxcroft has announced that thanks to the generosity of an anonymous donor they will be hosting two showings of the 1984 movie “Red Dawn.” The movie will be shown on Sunday, March 13 at 1 and 7 p.m. Admission to the movies will be by donation, to benefit the humanitarian medical work in Ukraine by the international nonprofit organization Doctors Without Borders.

The movie, which stars Patrick Swayze, Lea Thompson, and Charlie Sheen, tells the story of a small group of high school students in Colorado who resist a fictional invasion of the United States by the Russian army. Patrick Myers, executive director of the Center Theatre, said that the movie was suggested by a local donor who wants to remain anonymous.

“I was contacted last weekend about the possibility of showing the movie as a benefit for the relief efforts in the Ukraine,” he said. “The donor has generously paid for the movie royalties and rental fees so that all the donations collected can go directly to Doctors Without Borders and their humanitarian medical work in Ukraine.”

Myers thought it was a great way for a small community to do something to help the people of Ukraine.

“While we don’t expect to make a large impact, we’re glad we’re able to do something to help.” And while the impact of these showings may be small, Myers is trying to spread the word to other theaters in hopes of encouraging similar efforts. “It would be amazing if we saw hundreds of theaters across the country showing the movie in support of Ukraine.”
