Protecting public health

To the Editor;

The Maine people recently voted as a large majority to keep the law regarding vaccinations intact. By doing so, they showed that the majority of Maine citizens believe that protecting the public’s health overrides the individual’s right to refuse vaccinations. Likewise, protecting oneself from getting infected by the COVID virus protects the public’s health.

One person’s willingness to accept getting the infection should not override their sense of duty to protect their neighbors’, co-workers’ or family members’ health. Please follow the state’s current guidelines for protecting oneself from the COVID virus, which at the time I am writing includes masking and six feet distancing when in public places. These guidelines will be even more important as the state gradually resumes “normal” business activity and we all start to interact more with others in person. And won’t that feel good (even with the mask and distancing)!
