‘Unraveling Negative Thoughts’ at Nov. 13 NAMI session

DOVER-FOXCROFT — On Wednesday, Nov. 13 at 1 p.m. at The Commons at Central Hall, “Unraveling Negative Thoughts for a Brighter Future” will be examined through video presentation followed by discussion.

From time to time, many of us replay negative statements or scenarios in our minds throughout the day. These toxic thoughts, if left unchecked, can affect our lives by reinforcing negative emotions and actions. Everyone experiences distorted thoughts during insecure moments in life leaving us feeling anxious and depressed.

Cognitive Behavior Therapy is an approach that is used with the guidance of a mental health therapist to discover the relationship between behavior and thoughts. The negative internal dialogue can be changed to a positive one so as to change how we feel. First, it is necessary to recognize the negative thoughts before moving to change them. Cognitively, we can learn to use positive thoughts to produce calmness and eventual greater happiness.

Consider the concept of neuroplasticity in the process. The brain continues to be plastic and capable of positive change throughout life under normal circumstances. According to psychiatrist Dr. Daniel Binus, MD, there are 700 new nerve cells being born in your brain every single day. The specialized brain chemicals help your brain to grow. We can activate new neurological pathways using positive ways of thinking while at the same time leaving the old negative thought pathways to wither. Repetitive, positive thoughts change the brain’s circuitry. You can change your thoughts to change your life.

During the program on Nov. 13, you will learn how the 10 most common “negative thinking patterns” feed depression and anxiety, how Cognitive Behavior Therapy works, how to transform anger and addictions into healing, peace, and love and how to process trauma and suffering instead of numbing the pain through addiction and other self-destructive behaviors.
