Mayo merger concerns

To the Editor;
I was one of the four people that voted against the Mayo Regional Hospital-Northern Light Health (NLH) merger at the Sangerville special town meeting.

I had originally decided to vote for it, specifically to “Save” the jobs and keep the payroll in the area, in addition to local health care. But the more I saw about all the assets being absorbed by NLH, and without the full merger read or explained, I worried about no terms or return of said assets if NLH, after 4 or 5 years, decided to close Mayo.

There are no guarantees in the big corporate world — terms change due to economics: i.e.; bottom line profit and loss.

I would accept the merger if a return of leftover assets came back to the member towns in the event NLH would want to bail on Mayo being operational.

We need the hospital and the jobs in this area. But we need to protect our investment in this merger if down the road corporate change occurs.
