LeRoy Leslie Knowlton

DEXTER – LeRoy Leslie Knowlton, 95, passed away October 13, 2018 at home following a long period of declining health. He was born April 5, 1923 in Sangerville, to Leslie J. Knowlton and Rebecca (Hill) Knowlton. He graduated from Sangerville High School in 1942. He served as an aircraft mechanic in the 11th Airdrome Squadron, 13th Army Air Force in the Pacific Theater during World War II, earning the Asiatic Pacific Campaign Ribbon with battle stars for the Northern Soloman Islands, New Guinea, and Southern Philippines Campaigns. LeRoy went with his son Brian on the Honor Flight Maine trip to the World War II Memorial in Washington DC in 2016.
He worked for Fayscott Corporation in Dexter for 40 years and part time for Bud’s Shop and Save in Dexter for 8 years.
He was a Life Member of Conner-Trafton Post 119, the American Legion of Guilford for 74 years. He served as Post Adjutant for 50 years and was a past Post, County, and District Commander. He was a 72 year Life Member of Voiture 454 40/8 and served as Grand Chef de Gare (State Commander) in 1970-71. He was a member of the 13th Air Force Association.
LeRoy was a member of Penobscot Masonic Lodge #39 in Dexter, St. Johns Chapter 25 in Dexter, Central Council #18 in Dover-Foxcroft and Past Commander of DeMolay Commandry #10 in Skowhegan. He was also a 32nd degree member of the Scottish Rite, Anah Shrine and past member of The Arab Patrol.
He was a member of the First Universalist Church in Dexter and served as Past President of the Board of Directors, and a Deacon.
LeRoy is survived by a son, Brian of Dexter; two daughters, Nancy Jo Brewer of Newport and Heidi Langan and husband John of Austin, Texas; stepsons Brian, Brent and Mickey Colbry; and stepdaughter Diana Baird; several grand and great grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his parents, stepmother Hattie, first wife Patricia Palmer Knowlton, second wife Pauline Hayes Colbry Knowlton, brother Frank, sister Lois Lawson, stepsister Alice and stepbrother Russell.
The family thanks Community Health and Counseling Service, Hospice Care Unit of Dover-Foxcroft for their excellent care of LeRoy in his final month.
Friends may call from 6 – 8 P. M. Wednesday, October 17, at Crosby & Neal Funeral Home, 61 Main Street, Dexter, with a Masonic Service at 7 P. M. . Funeral services will be at 2 P.M. Thursday, October 18, at the First Universalist Church, Church Street, Dexter followed by burial with Military Honors at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery in Dexter.
