Nelson wins third straight Pony Pride 5K during Foxcroft Academy Alumni Weekend

DOVER-FOXCROFT — For the last 22 years Foxcroft Academy graduates, community members and visitors to the region have been able to kick off the Saturday of Foxcroft Academy Alumni Weekend/Dover-Foxcroft Shiretown Homecoming by running in the Pony Pride 5K. For the third year in a row on Aug. 4 the course started in front of the main school building, traveled across several streets in town as well as a trail before concluding with over a half a lap on the track to end at the finish line.

2016 Foxcroft Academy graduate Cooper Nelson, a rising junior on the University of Maine track teams, won the Pony Pride for the third year in a row. Nelson bested a field of 18 other runners in a time of 18 minutes, 11 seconds, crossing the finish line nearly a half minute ahead of second place.

As the only first-place finisher for the on-campus course, Nelson is now in a three-way tie for the second most all-time Pony Pride 5K first-place finishes. He also stands alone in second place for the longest winning streak, trailing only the four consecutive first-place runs from 2012-15 for 2009 Foxcroft Academy graduate Graham Pearsall.

Diane Keenan ran a time of 19:22 to earn the 2018 Pony Pride women’s title. Kennan earned top female honors for the second time in three years and third time overall. Keenan is tied for second place on the list of most career Pony Pride women’s victories. Her 19:22 set a women’s record for the newer course starting and ending on the Foxcroft Academy campus.
