PCSWCD offering ‘Families in the Outdoors’ series next month
The Piscataquis County Soil and Water Conservation District (PCSWCD) is excited to announce its fun, new series “Families in the Outdoors.” District staff invite the public to register for this series of three half-day programs, each with a different and fun theme and all featuring games, exploration, learning, special guests, hands-on activities and fun for the whole family.
Session one will be from 9 a.m. to noon on Friday, Aug. 3 at the Law Farm in Dover-Foxcroft. The theme for this session will be “Trees & Paper-Making” with a special guest the Maine Discovery Museum. Participants will learn about and search for trees species, play games, enjoy fun activities and making their own paper while taking a closer look under microscopes.
Session two will be from 9 a.m. to noon on Friday, Aug. 10 at the Law Farm. The theme for this session will be “All About Owls” and attendees will enjoy an interactive presentation from Grayson Richmond and his owls from Birdsacre Wildlife Sanctuary. Before meeting Grayson and the owls, participants will learn a bit about owls, play some owl-themed active games and even have a drawing for a barred owl house.
Session three is from 1-4 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 17 at the Demonstration Forest in Williamsburg. The theme for this session will be “Navigating the Maine Woods” and the special guest will be Dawna Blackstone of the Appalachian Mountain Club. Blackstone will lead some really fun activities, including a scavenger hunt and will teach those taking part how to use a compass. Also on the 17th will be a surprise guest speaker.
The goal of the Families in the Outdoors program is to provide fun, active and interesting opportunities for families to enjoy the outdoors, together. This program is designed for youth of all ages, parents, grandparents and other relatives. Families will participate in games together, complete challenges together, make things together and most importantly, have fun together.
Spaces is limited for Families in the Outdoors and attendees must pre-register. There is a small fee per person and children 3 and younger get in free. The PCSWCD is also running a special where if individuals attend two sessions, the third session is free.
