Betsey White Cousins
ABBOT, ME – Betsey White Cousins, 80 passed away peacefully on Saturday, May 5, 2018 after an-almost three year battle with cancer. She was born on June 5, 1937.
Betsey Louise White, born in Guilford, Maine, was the third, and youngest, child of John Powers White and Charlotte Hudson White. She attended Guilford schools, but finished out her secondary school years at Abbot Academy (now part of Phillips Andover) in Andover, MA. She attended the University of Maine for two years.
She was fortunate to be able to travel around the world and the country at various times in her life.
She married her soulmate F. Erwin Cousins in 1985.
Betsey is survived by her sister-in-law Norma White, nephew John White and his partner Rich Champagne, niece Shireen Shahawy and her husband Jeffrey Lee, grandniece Allison Stinneford and her husband Joshua Pray, and their daughter (Betsey’s great grandniece) Thea Pray, and dear cousin Sarah Hebb Carpenter and her husband and children.
Betsey was predeceased by her husband, F. Erwin Cousins, her parents John and Charlotte White, brother James H.H. White and sister Mary Loantha Shahawy.
Betsey has elected to donate her body for medical research to the University of New England and there will be no formal funeral service.
In lieu of flowers, and if you are so inclined, Betsey would want you to donate to the charity that brings meaning to your life, and also just one other thing. It was a well-known ritual for Betsey to stay in her nightgown all day on Sundays. She would occasionally accept a Sunday “date,” but begrudgingly and with a stern reminder that it was “nightshirt Sunday.” Please, on a Sunday very soon after reading this – uphold the tradition and enjoy your own “nightshirt Sunday” in Betsey’s honor.
