May events at Thompson Free Library

DOVER-FOXCROFT — Saying goodbye is never easy. Endings tend to elicit a whole range of emotions. Whether it’s the last chapter of a book or the final episode of a television show, letting go of familiar characters takes a bit of time and adjustment. The month of May brings change and continuity to Dover-Foxcroft’s Thompson Free Library.

Thursday, May 10 from 1:30-2:30 p.m. Dexter herbalist Linda Tisdale presents “Spring Cleansing Herbs 101.” Learn about herbs used to detox and enliven healthy digestive function, which Linda calls, “the foundation of good health.” She will demonstrate how to make an herbal tincture using locally harvested spring herbs, giving us the tools to preserve medicinal plants for future use.

Saturday, May 12 from 9-11 a.m. Librarian Michelle Fagan will participate in Healthy Kids Day at the PRYMCA. She will promote our summer reading and library programs. Stop by and get the inside scoop!

Make sure to experience Anne Frank’s “A History for Today” — the 33-panel exhibit at the Maine Highlands Senior Center/Central Hall in Dover-Foxcroft. Thompson Free Library and D-F Kiwanis are partnering with SSO (Sedomocha School Organization), the lead organizer, to bring this important and educational work to the area. Please check the TFL Facebook page for dates and times.

A big heads-up: the library will be closed on Friday, May 18 so we can attend a staff training conference.

Finally, you are invited stop by the library on Thursday, May 24 from 4-7 p.m. as we say goodbye to Helen Fogler who has served as the library director for the last 21 years. Join us as we give Helen a fond farewell party and send her off to retirement with our best wishes.

“It’s time, but it won’t be easy–it’s been my home for two decades,” Helen recently told a patron. She made others feel at home too. When Helen got to know your tastes, she would walk over and say, “I have a book I think you’ll like,” much to the delight of patrons wondering what to read next. Those small moments — and all the impromptu conversations that followed — will be missed.

So, come share your library memories and celebrate Helen’s commitment to the community, to creating and maintaining a vibrant and varied collection, and giving all ages an environment in which to learn and explore. And, just a welcoming place to meet the challenges of everyday life.
