Lakeshore House in Monson hosts sushi night as kickoff to spring
MONSON — The Lakeshore House in Monson is ramping up for the long-awaited summer season just a little early. They began by hosting a special intimate sushi night on Monday, April 23. It was a big success, so much so that the event will be repeated in the near future. Simply check their Facebook page for upcoming events.
I happen to really enjoy good sushi, so to have it prepared in the meticulous way the Japanese do by the Lakeshore’s owner Rebekah Anderson was a delight indeed. She uses the freshest ingredients (flown in from Catalina Offshore Seafood on dry ice), including the wonderful sticky rice, the Nori (a paper-thin seaweed wrap) and rolls it out on bamboo as traditionalists do. Even the presentation, with rectangular dishes and chopsticks, is traditional. I asked some of the guests what they thought.
“It was amazing! Everything tasted great,” enthused Laurie Bizeau of Shirley. Martha Tartachny of Greenville Junction concurred: “I love sushi – and this was just delicious.” Photographer Monica Lynn observed, “When you can get sushi in Monson Maine, everything is right in the world. Even if it’s only for a moment.”
Anderson said that the Lakeshore House, now in its 12th year, has some wonderful changes to be rolled out over this spring and summer, including more of her popular sushi nights. One of the big changes will be a new docking system in the cove behind the building, capable of handling up to five boats at one time. She will be sharing the dock with her Libra Foundation neighbors, on either side.
“It just makes more sense to have one nice big dock instead of three little ones all crowded together,” Anderson observed. The dock spaces will be available for public use as folks come into Monson by boat. Anderson wants the lakefront homeowners to feel free to explore the downtown as well as enjoy dining at her establishment. If it becomes too congested she’ll address it at that time.
The lakeside seating area behind the restaurant will feature various guest artists over the summer. Most of these Sunday afternoon concerts will happen between 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. and folks are welcome to attend via donation. Jenny Lou Drew will be starting this great venue on Sunday, May 31. An exception to this Sunday schedule will be the Mallett Brothers, who will be featured for the first time in Monson at 7 p.m. on Saturday, June 23. In addition, Anderson has leased the fenced-in area next to her building where she will create an outside restaurant over the weekends. “It will be open to the public Friday, Saturday, and Sunday and run as a stand alone bistro-esque complement to the existing restaurant, with a completely separate menu from the Lakeshore House,” she said. “In fact, it will be a completely separate everything. We plan to offer light fare – seasonal appetizers, raw bar, charcuterie boards, beer and wine. Lobster dinners and grilled items will be featured as well. It will be a very casual, lakeside experience with low, comfy, outdoor furniture like you might find on a swanky patio.” The furnishings will be placed under a 40-foot by 20-foot high-end commercial tent, with a bar of some sort at one end to handle beverages and food prep. “I like the idea of small plates,” Anderson said. “Tastes of this and that to accompany your adult beverage or mocktail.”

Anderson is offering that lovely lakeside space for small weddings, meetings, reunions and family gatherings.
