Foley receives Maine McDonald’s All-State Academic Scholarship

BANGOR — Nick Foley of Greenville High School and Anya Chase of Wells High School were both recipients of a $2,000 Maine McDonald’s All-State Academic Scholarship during the March 9 Maine McDonald’s all-star banquet at the Anah Shrine Hall.

Foley and Chase were selected for the scholarships from among the 10 boys and 10 girls previously selected to the Maine McDonald’s All-State Academic Team.

Foley, who last weekend led the Greenville boys basketball team to the Class D championship — the program’s first state title since 1954 — is ranked second in his senior class academically and plans to attend Bowdoin College in Brunswick beginning this fall followed by law school.

He captained the Lakers’ soccer, basketball and golf teams, and this winter Foley broke the school record for career points in boys basketball.

He also is a four-year member of Key Club and has served as student council treasurer and class vice president. He has participated in the debate team, school marketing project, school musical productions and attended Dirigo Boys State.

Chase also ranks in the top two of her class at Wells and is a three-year member of the varsity basketball team who also played field hockey, soccer and softball. She has been recognized with the Western Maine team sportsmanship award, SMAA field hockey team sportsmanship award, and field hockey offensive player of the year award.

Chase has received the Dartmouth Book award and the AP Scholar with Distinction Award and is a four-year member of the math team, an eighth-grade math tutor and serves as treasurer of the National Honor Society.

She has been accepted to Massachusetts Institute of Technology where she plans to study biological engineering and play on the softball team.
