AARP to host local coffee talks and September shredding event

Are you interested in knowing how AARP and local leaders are working together to create a more age-friendly culture, making Dover-Foxcroft, Milo, Dexter, Guilford, and Greenville more livable for people of all ages? Want to share your ideas? Would you like to know more about how AARP is advocating for older adults statewide? If so, come to the AARP Coffee Talk at Elaine’s Bakery in Milo on Thursday, September 21 from 10 – 11:30 a.m. or join us at The Mill Café in Dover-Foxcroft on Tuesday, September 26, from 10 – 11:30 a.m. We’ll have plenty of free coffee and refreshments, and you’ll have time to visit with new and old friends. You do not have to live in Milo or Dover-Foxcroft to attend these gatherings. If you need transportation, call Lynx Mobility Services at 973-3695 or 866-853-5969. As individual towns in Piscataquis join the AARP Network of Age-Friendly Communities and launch their initiatives,

AARP is sponsoring these monthly coffee gatherings at central locations.
AARP is also teaming up with the Piscataquis Thriving in Place Collaborative and Maine Highlands Senior Center to sponsor a free shredding event in Dover-Foxcroft on Saturday, September 16, from 8 a.m. to noon. This is an opportunity for residents in the region to dispose of documents that contain confidential information by having them shredded. You may drop off documents at Central Hall, 152 East Main Street, on the morning of the event, or you may stay and witness them being shredded.

It is estimated that in the United States someone’s identity is stolen every two seconds. That is how bad the problem is. As we know from news reports regarding hacked accounts, it is likely going to get worse. Don’t be the next victim. Each of us has the ability to be our own best fraud fighter instead. Shredding sensitive documents is essential to our efforts to stay safe from this crime. Empower yourself and you and your family can stay safe from scams and fraud.

For more information about the Coffee Talks or the shredding event, check the AARP Maine website, or call Meg Callaway at 564-0273.
