Garland Days set for Sept. 7-10
GARLAND — Garlands Days returns this year from Sept. 7-10 with a theme of “Connecting Communities Through the Woods.”
On Thursday, Sept. 7 registration for the scarecrow contest starts at 4 p.m. at the Garland Store, and then judging will start at 5 p.m. The same time schedule applies to the pie contest at the Garland Grange.
From 6:30-8 p.m. a discussion on land use and conversation will take place at the Grange.
Friday, Sept. 8 the Garland Historical Society hosts a pie and ice cream social from 5:30-7 p.m. with music by “Deb and Fred.” That evening from 7:30-9:30 p.m. will be a teen dance with DJ Steve Pratt at the Community Center.
A full slate of Garland Days events is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 9. The parade lineup will be from 9-10 a.m. at the Community Center, and at 10 a.m. the procession starts along the route. Ribbons will be awarded for Best in Show, Use of Theme, Motorized, Non-Motorized and Junior Entrants.
Many of the day’s events will be at the town field, including a craft fair from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and at 10:45 a.m. Zack Field opens the day by singing the National Anthem.
From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. the Lyndon Oak Library hosts a lawn party and after parade book sale.
The town field will be the site of kids’ games and events from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. as well as the Garland Rec Cook Shack from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. train rides by the Garland Historical Society and chainsaw carving by Josh Landry. One of Landry’s carvings will be raffled off.
At noon the H.J. Crosby Community Band performs, and John Giles starts his reptile demonstration.
Competitors can test their arms in the skillet toss at 1 p.m. and at 1:30 p.m. children can run in a foot race. Entrants can register for free and compete in 3-4, 5-6, 7-8, 9-10 and 11-12 age groups.
1980s cover band Non Profit will take to the stage at 1:30 p.m. and at 3 p.m. will be children’s circle dancing.
The Perkco Pig Scramble starts at 3:30 p.m. with registration running an hour before the start.
The Grange serves a public supper from 5-7 p.m. to be followed by a Contra Dance.
The Grange then hosts a breakfast from 7-10 a.m. on Sunday, Sept. 10. At 10 a.m. the North Country Horse Show begins at 10 a.m.
