Alumni group awards scholarships

BROWNVILLE JCT. — At their annual business meeting on Friday, Aug. 11, the Brownville Junction High School Alumni Association decided to increase the number of scholarships given this year from eight to 12 after reviewing the excellent grades of applicants.

All 12 scholarship recipients have grade point averages above 3.7; six have grade point averages of 4.0 or above. Each scholarship is in the amount of $1,500 and will be awarded at the beginning of the second semester of the school year.

Recipients of scholarships this year are as follows:

Four Margaret Law scholarships will be awarded this year to students who are pursuing a career in the medical field. The first scholarship recipient this year is Mackenzie Worcester of Washburn. Her BJHS alumni connections are grandparents Fred Worcester and Carol Melanson. Worcester is attending Husson University majoring in physical therapy.

The second Margaret Law scholarship is awarded to Caityn Durant from Williamsburg Township, the granddaughter of Barbara Farrar and Virginia Morrill Wado. She has completed her undergraduate program and is continuing her education to receive a degree in nursing from the University of Maine at Fort Kent.

The third Margaret Law scholarship is awarded to recent Penquis Valley High School graduate, Jordan Durant of Brownville, the granddaughter of Barbie Durant and Whit and Linda Coburn. She plans to attend Husson University to major in physical therapy.

The final Margaret Law scholarship is presented to Morgan Buchanan, a recent graduate of Scarborough High School and the granddaughter of Sharon Ingalls and the great-granddaughter of Marion Cail. She plans to attend the University of Maine to major in psychology.

The Greta Connors scholarship was presented to Blake Morrison, the son of Nicki Morrison of Ebeemee Township. He attends the University of Maine, Orono, majoring in English and political science.

The Henry and Annie Graves scholarship is awarded to Gretchen Petrie of Portsmouth, R.I., the granddaughter of Patricia Vickers Petrie. She is attending Providence College majoring in elementary/special education.

The Eleanor Rosebush scholarship recipient is Brandon Bryer, great-grandson of Elmer Cunningham. He is from Scarborough and attends Morehead State University in Kentucky, majoring in political science/business.

A second Eleanor Rosebush scholarship is awarded to Amber Smith of Union, N.H., who attends Southern New Hampshire University majoring in business administration with a minor in sports management. Sheis the granddaughter of Milton Smith, Jr., also of Union.

The recipient of the Don Stiles Scholarship is Alyssa Murano of LaGrange, the granddaughter of Donald Martin, Sr. She attends Husson University. Her major is healthcare studies.

A second Don Stiles scholarship is presented to Patrick Buzza, a resident of Auburn who studies at Northeastern University majoring in electrical and computer engineering. He is the grandson of Charlene Buzza.

The BJHS Alumni Scholarship is awarded to Victoria Bryer. The granddaughter of Janet E Burgoyne Bryer, she graduated from Killingly High School in Dayville, Conn., this spring. She plans to attend Eastern Connecticut State University to study environmental earth science.

The Allen B. Lente scholarship is presented this year to Clayton Preble., a recent graduate of Penquis Valley High School. He lives in Milo and is the grandson of Barbie Sickler. He plans to attend Maine Maritime Academy and will major in power engineering.

These scholarships are open to any student who has a parent, grandparent, or great-grandparent who is a member of the Brownville Junction High School Alumni Association. Membership is open, also, to graduates of Penquis Valley High School.
