Retired educator news
DOVER-FOXCROFT — The Piscataquis County Retired Educators Association met at the Bear’s Den May 23 with 12 members present.
President Gil Reynolds introduced Lauren Gaudet, Stay Active and Independent for Life (SAIL) director at Reddy Health Center in Dexter. Gaudet asked what things in a home could be dangerous such as rugs, not enough lighting, no rails in the bathroom, etc. She presented exercises to build and gain balance and explained how canes, walkers and other devices are useful for balance. Gaudet said to not be too proud to ask for help as she demonstrated some exercises.
Reynolds immediately resigned as president. He had ballots prepared for voting with Rheba Michaud elected as president and Donna Caruso as vice president. All other offices and positions will remain the same.
New President Michaud then took over the meeting, asking for the Collect and Pledge of Allegiance. Gloria Burns read the secretary’s report and a thank you note from Lisa White of Pine Tree Hospice for inviting her to be a speaker at the last meeting and how kind the group was to her.
Myrna Ricker gave the treasurer’s report and announced the Esther Pennington Scholarship winner. Recipient Crystal Macomber of Foxcroft Academy will be attending the University of Maine at Farmington to study elementary education. The Piscataquis County Retired Educators Association wishes Macomber well.
Michaud gave a report on convention. She noted that some counties have door prizes and some news about their chapters and she would like Piscataquis County group to do something similar another year. Michaud would also like to get some local articles in The Clarion, the Maine educators newsletter.
The association will serve an Aug. 7 community dinner at the Congregational church. Members volunteered to bring dishes, help serve and clean up.
Reynolds announced that his granddaughter Ashley Reynolds is the Salutatorian at Dexter Regional High School.
The next meeting will be June 27.
