Women’s club members learn about the area food cupboard

DOVER-FOXCROFT — General Federation of Women’s Club (GFWC)/Miosac Club members listened intently as Karen King of the Dover-Foxcroft Area Food Cupboard spoke about her work and the cupboard — currently housed at the Dover-Foxcroft Congregational Church but moving to the former Agway building when the facility is ready.

Food distribution is twice a month with the 70-75 families getting the same amount of items. The food cupboard partners with the Good Shepherd Food Bank. As well as providing food, the Dover-Foxcroft Area Food Cupboard also creates friendships. Produce is free through The Good Shepherd Food Bank — which was a project of GFWC Maine a few years ago — and food can be purchased for a reduced cost. The local food cupboard also handles the local backpack program , sending healthy food items home for the weekend with students.

GFWC/Miosac Club President Anne Cress called the meeting to order welcomed guests and thanked Betsey Ryan for introducing the guest speaker. Secretary Diane Leighton took roll with all with 12 members responding. She then read the minutes of the last meeting which were accepted with clarification.

Treasurer Pat Jones gave her report, noting that she was closing the books for the annual meeting report at the next meeting.

Wendy Hutchins reported her class at the SeDoMoCha School had gathered the most boxtops at that time with 412 tops.

Cress reported almost $500 was raised so far with the ice out contest.

Money from the change jar was counted and a check for that amount will be sent to the GFWC Maine President’s Project, The Nyolo School. All state clubs will be contributing to the school.

Hutchins spoke about the local high school art contest and the District 2-3 Art Show. A couple of local artists were winners.

McCormick presented the new program covers made by Angela Hovencamp.

She read reports for the pinwheel project and veteran’s project held earlier in the year. The reports will go on the state report of volunteer hours and projects at the end of2017.

Rheba Michaud volunteered to fill the late Athalie Burke’s place on the budget committee.

Members spoke about places where they would donate money as their community project — several were mentioned and the vote was taken. A sum of $200 will be given to Dover-Foxcroft Area Food Cupboard for non-food costs such as rent. Contributions will also be given to the senior center at Central Hall and Piscataquis Regional YMCA.

The meeting was adjourned and delicious refreshments were served by Ryan and Suzanne Raymond.
