Maine Conservation Corp continues trail building at Law Farm
DOVER-FOXCROFT — The Piscataquis County Soil and Water Conservation District (PCSWCD) hosted a six-member Maine Conservation Corp (MCC) team at its Law Farm public land from Oct. 31 to Nov. 3. The goal for having the MCC team was to further the trail work the PCSWCD has underway on the property and to get closer to having a complete set of nature trails for the public to enjoy.
The PCSWCD worked with the MCC back in 2014 to start a mile loop trail at the Law Farm and the district was eager for a team to return to further this work. During the week the MCC team was at the Law Farm, they were able to accomplish many major steps toward the goal of completing the one-mile Law Farm Looping Trail. Although this trail stills needs additional clearing and marking, the MCC team was able to make significant progress on the trail and also remove invasive honeysuckle from the Bogwalk Trail and start an extensive new boardwalk that connects the bog to one of the forestry demonstration areas. They also received natural resource education through the PCSWCD and Forester Kirby Ellis, who developed the forest management plan for the Law Farm.
The MCC is managed through the Maine Department of Agriculture, Conservation & Forestry, and is available to non-profits, public lands and other organizations to work on conservation projects throughout the state. The mission of the MCC is to engage conservation volunteers, create conservation employment, accomplish conservation projects and provide conservation education.
The Law Farm, located off of the Milo Road, was deeded to the PCSWCD in 2009 by Stephen and Elaine Law. Since that time the district has worked hard to develop the 112-acre property into a dynamic public land for residents and visitors to explore nature, learn about conservation and enjoy year-round recreational activities. In the years to come work will continue to improve the property, complete the trails and build it into a great place for schools, family, friends and neighbors to gather.
