New NAMI daytime support group

GUILFORD — In response to area NAMI members’ requests, NAMI Piscataquis County is adding a daytime support group. People looking for daytime support include those with school-age children and those wanting to avoid night driving. The addition of a second support group also will allow members two chances each month to connect with others if they so choose. The successful evening support group will still be available for those who prefer a nighttime group meeting.

There are many benefits to support group participation. Members have the opportunity to share sensitive issues and personal feelings in a safe, non-judgmental environment with others experiencing the impact of mental health challenges. Within a NAMI support group, you are not alone. What is said in a NAMI support group stays within the group session.

When given the opportunity to talk about their challenges either as a family member or as a person experiencing mental health difficulties, participants often are able to reduce stress, depression, and anxiety. They can learn about helpful community resources, examine specific mental illness characteristics, feel less isolated, improve coping skills and develop a sense of empowerment. Support group members gain an understanding of what to expect as they compare experiences. It’s all about the confidential, caring connections of people supporting each other.

The new daytime support group will meet for the first time on Wednesday, Nov. 9 from 10:30 a.m. to noon at the Guilford Memorial Library in the private downstairs meeting room. NAMI Piscataquis County is an affiliate of NAMI Maine, which is an affiliate of the National Alliance on Mental Illness.
