Free community Qigong classes to continue at Center Theatre
DOVER-FOXCROFT — The new open Qigong class at the Center Theatre is pleased to announce that as the first eight-week trial session draws to a close, enthusiasm for the program is strong and plans are to continue. With the support of the Maine Highlands Senior Center and the Thriving in Place Coalition Fall Risk Reduction team , teacher Scott Mayer from Dexter will continue to offer the classes at no cost in hopes of engaging as many people from the community as possible.
Qigong is a gentle and ancient practice which cultivates improved energy, balance and vitality. In China it is practiced daily by millions of people in parks and public spaces. Although related to the martial art of Tai Chi, Qigong is easier to learn and simply requires a willingness to do it with dedication and without fear.
The Center Theatre, as part of its desire to support the vibrancy of the community, is opening its space to the group for free. This allows the group to continue rain, snow or shine. It also is next to the Center Coffee House which adds some attractiveness for people who might want a cup of excellent espresso or donut after the class.
Mayer is a wonderful, patient teacher with over 40 years of experience in various forms of Chinese healing. He runs the Still Pine Center in Dexter where he teaches Tai Chi and offers other types of Chinese healing. He mixes in gentle humor, positive imaging and a belief in everyone’s ability to succeed. The class, currently composed of all ages, is engaging and fun and allows people to proceed at their own pace.
The hope of the group is that it will eventually be part of the weekly routine of more people in the community, and will just be part of the “fabric” of the emerging downtown vitality. Maine Highlands Senior Center urges people to stop by and see what it is all about Wednesday mornings from 8:30-9:30 a.m. Dress comfortably and bring a smile.
