Nancy Doore Smith

SMITH, Nancy Doore, 88, Dover-Foxcroft, November 6, 2015. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., on Friday, November 13, at the Chapel of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Dover- Foxcroft. Arrangements are under the care of the Lary Funeral Home, Dover-Foxcroft.

DOVER-FOXCROFT – Nancy Doore Smith, home with her daughter, Alicia, at her bedside, passed away peacefully November 6, 2015. She was born July 11, 1927, in Wakefield, MA, the youngest of nine children to Clarence and Mary (Molly) Brown Doore. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Owen H. Smith; infant daughter, Barbara; and daughter, Kathleen (Katy) Warren.

She is survived by six children: Susan and her husband, Mark Stevens of Dover-Foxcroft, Harold and his wife, Darlene of Bangor, Matthew and his wife, Julianne of Fredericksburg, VA, Alicia and her husband, Douglas Snapp of Orem, UT; Patricia (Trisha) of Dover-Foxcroft, and Daniel (Dr. Dan) and his wife, Monique of Dover- Foxcroft; 30 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; and her sister, Barbara Goodwin, of Topsham, ME.

She and Owen married in 1948, then moved to Dover- Foxcroft in 1949, making their home on Bolton Road in 1953, remaining there until the last four years, enjoying milder winters with daughter, Alicia and her husband, in Orem, UT.

She loved books, word games, flowers and FreeCell. A serial volunteer, among other things, she served as a 4-H leader, Red Cross blood donor coordinator, and developed and tended the flower beds at Mayo Regional Hospital. Sharing her talent in Mathematics, she tutored many children over the years. Also known for her knitting and crocheting, she delivered mittens and afghans in custom colors and patterns to her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She enjoyed square dancing, and received a bachelor’s degree in Horticulture from the University of Maine.

Summer always meant time at the family camp on South Cove, Sebec Lake. She owned a small bookstore, traveled to most every state including Alaska and Hawaii, traveled overseas to New Zealand, Greece, England and Italy.

Always active in church, her faith was an inspiration to her family and friends. She was dedicated in serving in the church playing piano from time to time for youth programs, and spent years as a teacher in different capacities, including early morning seminary classes.

Friends and family are invited to visit from 6-8 p.m., Thursday, November 12, 2015, at Lary Funeral Home, Dover-Foxcroft. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., on Friday, November 13, at the Chapel of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 660 Bangor Road, Dover-Foxcroft. Interment will be directly following the service at the Dover Cemetery on Vaughn Street.
