DOVER-FOXCROFT — For the past few months, knitters from the Thompson Free Library Knitting Group have kept their knitting needles clicking away while participating in the “Stitch Out Cancer Pink and White Scarf Project”.
This project was created by sheJAMs, a Portland- based all-women’s club for active woman. The goal of sheJAMs is to collect 2,500 handmade pink and white scarves, which will be presented to participants in CHALLENGE sheJAMs Tri-4-A-Cure Triathlon, for their efforts to raise funds to find a cure for cancer. The eighth annual triathlon, a unique, all women’s swim/bike/run completion, will take place on Sunday Aug. 30 in Old Orchard Beach.
Each scarf was knitted using only pink and white yarn. Some knitters followed already-written patterns, while others designed their own. All scarves were knitted using “stitches of love” and each has been tagged with the knitter’s name and the name of a loved one, co-worker, family member or friend who has had breast cancer or has been touched by cancer or is a breast cancer survivor herself.
The knitting group donated 12 scarves and meets weekly at the Thompson Free Library on Tuesdays from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.
This year’s Tri-4-A-Cure Triathlon not only brings awareness to breast cancer but is also partnering with Make-A Wish, to help bring reality a wish for a child in Maine with a life threatening disease. For more information, go to Facebook- Stitch Out Cancer- or www..shejamstri.com
