GFWC/Miosac Club news
By Minnie McCormick
DOVER-FOXCROFT — Eleven GFWC/Miosac Club members enjoyed foods from Norway, Germany, Ireland, China and Italy and Vienese coffee at the international dinner held at Thayer Parkway Jan. 20. The tables were decorated with international flags and items from different countries.
Following dinner, Vice President Anne Cress opened the meeting in the absence of the President Vicki Moschella. Five members were absent due to illness and travel. Member Suzanne Raymond was in Washington, D.C for a meeting of the GFWC International Board. Cress thanked the advisory committee, Carol Kilpatrick, Pat Jones and Minnie McCormick. She then wished Betsey Ryan a happy birthday. Ryan is one of five February birthdays of club members.
Brenda Quiet led the Club Collect, American’s Creed and the Pledge of Allegiance. McCormick took roll call and read the minutes of the last meeting. Kilpatrick gave the treasurer’s report. Both were accepted as read.
Kilpatrick reported she had sent checks for the four International Projects the club is supporting. Roxy McGlauflin reported on some ill members. McGlauflin also reported a prayer shawl had been given to one of our members who has been ill for a while.
Pat Jones announced the next meeting was scheduled Feb. 3 with a craft demonstration.
Elaine Larson reported on the upcoming local art contest to be held March 22 at the Congregational Church. More information will be available later. Three of the four schools have responded and will be participating. The District Art Contest will be April 4 at Jeff’s Catering in Brewer.
The annual Ice Out contest at Sebec Lake was discussed. Cress volunteered to be chairman this year. We will need to find new judges and she will work on that. Members will be selling tickets February through March. If you need or want tickets, call any club member. More publicity is needed so we will address that at the next meeting.
It was noted that the Living Word Community Food Cupboard will be closing in March. Hopefully there will be another one at a new place. More on that later.
McCormick explained the new volunteer hour sheets as some members were confused as to what to report and where to put it. These hours are necessary for GFWC International funding and awards for projects we have participated in.
The meeting was adjourned. The next meeting was Feb. 3 with hostesses Diane Leighton and Cress. McCormick will present the program on quilting and ribbon embroidery.
