Alice Nellie Dow Shepardson
DOVER-FOXCROFT – Alice Nellie Dow Shepardson, 103, went home to be with the Lord on April 14, 2014, at Hibbard Nursing Home, surrounded by her family. She was born at her home in East Dover on January 4, 1911, to Lewis Herbert Sr. and Lillian Mitchell Dow, the fifth of ten children.
Alice was raised on a farm in East Dover and attended schools in East Dover and Foxcroft Academy, graduating in 1929. Alice was a 50+ year member of the East Dover Grange and attended regularly until it dissolved. She worked in the office at Foxcroft Academy and also as an operator at the Dover Telephone Company.
She married Alphonso Leroy Shepardson on April 26, 1941, and continued to work while he was in the service during World War II. Upon his return after the war, they purchased Tri-County Cleaners, formerly the Piscataquis Steam Laundry. Alice also worked for the Department of Health & Welfare until her retirement in 1976.
She was a member of the United Methodist Church, The Wesleyan Society and the Order of the Eastern Star. She was awarded the Boston Post Cane in July 2012, which is an honor given to the oldest citizen of the town of Dover-Foxcroft.
Alice loved to travel with her family. She had a love for music and learned to play the piano at an early age. She enjoyed many summers with her family at the camp on Sebec Lake. She enjoyed knitting and crocheting and a multitude of other crafts.
Alice was predeceased by her parents; her husband of 50 years; her brothers, Elwin, Elmer, Stanley and Ralph Dow; and sisters, Ada Dow Foley and Ruth Dow.
Alice is survived by two sisters, Helen Dow Thomas of Naugatuck, CT, and Luella Dow Ostrofsky of Easton, CT; one brother, Lewis H. Dow, Jr. and wife, Leona, of Sebec; four children, Margaret “Peggy” Wakeland of Bowerbank, Lucette Merson of Baltimore, MD, Lewis Shepardson and wife, Laura, of Aztec, NM, and Rachel Kimball and husband, Bryan, of Sangerville. She leaves eight grandchildren, Teri Mace and husband, Bob, Tim Wakeland and wife, Allison, Tami Flanders and husband, Paul, Ted Wakeland and wife, Katherine, Dawn Peck and husband, Carl, Mathew and Sara Shepardson, and Toby Kimball; ten great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Friends called 6-8 p.m., Thursday, April 17, 2014, at the Lary Funeral Home, Dover-Foxcroft. A funeral service was conducted 3 p.m., Friday, April 18, at the Dover-Foxcroft United Methodist Church with Pastor Mark Stevens officiating.
