Effie Lucretia (Jackson) Banks

PO-EffieBanksOB    SOUTH YARMOUTH, MA – Effie Lucretia (Jackson) Banks, 92, of South Yarmouth, MA, died at home on March 28, surrounded by her family.
Born in Bangor, ME, Effie was the daughter of Lewis and Elizabeth Jackson. The eldest of seven siblings, Effie was raised and educated in Dover-Foxcroft, ME, moving to Boston, MA, after her marriage to her late husband, William A. (Bill) Banks. Effie and Bill moved to South Yarmouth, MA, in 1954, where they raised their three children.
Effie worked variously as a recorder for a land title company and as a clerk at Robinson’s Five and Dime and, later alongside her husband, at Bradford’s Hardware.
Effie’s family was the centerpiece of her long and wonderful life. She was a constant presence in the lives of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, as mentor, confidant and best friend to all. She was accomplished at all manner of card games and enjoyed long hours playing cards with her children and grandchildren, as well as her long-time neighbor and close friend, Marge.
She was also an enthusiastic reporter and commentator on the news of the day, particularly the weather, for which she kept prodigious records.
Effie was preceded in death by her parents; her sisters, Gertrude, Louise and Phyllis; her husband, Bill; and her daughter, Carol Ward.
She is survived by her son, William A. Banks, Jr., and his wife, Marilyn; her daughter, Alexandria (Sandy) Boudreau and her husband, Philip; her son-in-law, John Ward; her grandchildren, Brenda Ward, Sherri Ward, Jennifer Peto, Dustin Banks, Alexandria Boudreau, Brendan Boudreau and Nicole Boudreau; and her great-grandchildren, Sebastian Peto and Michael Banks. She is also survived by her sisters, Gerry and Margaret; and her brother, Lewis.
With the help of family and many devoted and loving caregivers, Effie was able to fulfill her wish to remain at home during her last months; and her family is very grateful to all who helped make this possible.
A memorial service and celebration of Effie’s life will be held at Morris, O’Connor and Blute Funeral Home, 58 Long Pond Drive, South Yarmouth, MA, on May 3, 2014, at 11:30 a.m., with burial at Mosswood Cemetery, Cotuit, to follow.
