Organizers pleased with Plum Creek Wilderness Race
GREENVILLE — Saturday, Feb. 1 proved to be one of the nicest days that the Moosehead Lake area had seen in many weeks.
With temps in the 20s and plenty of sunshine, more than 300 people shared the excitement of the Plum Creek 100-mile Wilderness Sled Dog Race.
Musher Martin Massicotte from Quebec won first place in the 100-mile race with a time of 9:10:39; and Don Hibbs from Nahmakanta Camps came in second with a time of 9:27:03.
Ten dog teams raced over Plum Creek Timber and Appalachian Mountain Club (AMC) public lands to AMC’s Medawisla in Kokadjo with the last team coming back to Leisure Life Resort at 11:50 p.m. “AMC is glad to be part of an event that is so important to the region,” said AMC land manager Steve Tatko.
Earlier in the day, 13 dog teams raced in the 30-mile race from Greenville up around Blue Ridge Mountain. The first musher back to the start was Amy Dionne from St. David with a time of 2:14:50. The second-place finisher was Amy de Wolski from Troy with a time of 2:15:20.

Organizers wish to thank Leisure Life Resort for hosting the event and providing a warm and hearty place for all to await the return of the sled dog teams, even into the late evening hours.
Next year’s race is scheduled for Feb. 7, 2015.
