Joseph “Joe” Emmons Brown

PO-JosephBrownOB    DOVER-FOXCROFT & GREENVILLE JCT. – Joseph Emmons Brown, 66, died peacefully Sunday, Nov. 17, 2013, at Mayo Regional Hospital, Dover-Foxcroft. Joe was born November 22, 1946, at Brown’s Nursing Home, Dover-Foxcroft. He was the adopted son of Emmons and Doris (McPherson) Brown. Joe lived in Dover-Foxcroft during his early childhood and in 1954, moved with his parents to Monson. Joe attended Dover-Foxcroft and Monson schools. While growing up in Monson, he was a constant companion to his father, Emmons, on the many trips to the hunting camp they built in Winkumville and on the fishing trips to the ocean and to Moosehead Lake.
As a young man, he enjoyed his own trucking company. In 1985, he went to work for the Maine Department of Transportation where he worked until his retirement in 2001, due to illness. In retirement, he spent a number of years driving buses for rafting trips, where he enjoyed all the people he met.
Joe was a devoted caregiver for a number of years for his mother and father until their deaths. He loved to joke and tease anyone of any age and loved to be teased as well. Joe was a great one to give orders and loved to be waited on, thus his nickname, “Com-mander Joe Brown.”
In addition to his parents, Joe was predeceased by a sister, Arline Bishop; a brother, Merle Brown; and uncle and aunt, James and Ramona McPherson. He is survived by nieces, Rose Fox and husband, David; and Doris Powell and husband, Dane; nephews, Dan Bishop and wife, Catrena; Lionel Bishop and wife, Gail; and Peter  Bishop; many grandnieces, grandnephews and several cousins.
Joe spent the last few years of his life at Hilltop Manor and Hibbard Nursing Home. His family is grateful that he was well cared for and supported by a caring staff. The family would also like to thank the doctors, nurses and staff at Mayo Regional Hospital for their care and support.
At Joe’s request there will be no visitation or funeral service. Joe wished to be cremated and have his ashes spread on Moosehead Lake. Arrangements are in the care of the Lary Funeral Home, Dover-Foxcroft. Condolences and memories may be expressed at www.laryfuneralhome.com.
