BJHS scholarship applications now available

    BROWNVILLE — The Brownville Junction High School has been “defunct” since 1968 but the alumni association of the former high school continues to be active. They will be holding their annual reunion the weekend of Aug. 16-17 at the Alumni Building on Railroad Avenue in Brownville Jct. Almost since its inception the group has offered several scholarships to children, grandchildren and now great-grandchildren of its members. For a number of years graduates of Penquis Valley High School have also been invited to become members of the organization. One of the benefits of membership is access to the scholarships available to college students.

    Presently the organization offers five annual scholarships. One of those scholarships goes to a high school senior; one is awarded to a student studying in the medical area; one is awarded to a student enrolled in a four year program; and two are available to any applicant. The scholarship winners are determined solely on the basis of grades. Scholarships are awarded to the student with the highest GPA in each category. Students can apply for as many of the scholarships for which they are eligible.
    Applications must be received by scholarship chairperson Susan Worcester by July 31. Dues for the current year must be paid (and can be submitted with the scholarship application) and to be a member one must have attended Brownville Junction High School or Penquis Valley High School.
