MEALS FROM THE FIELDS CAFE — Stutzman’s Farm in Sangerville recently expanded the farm stand with the Meals from the Fields Cafe, featuring Stutzman’s own fresh seasonal fruits and vegetables as well as locally grown meats and Somerset Coffees. The cafe, below, overlooks the fields where the crops are grown for menu items.
The new facility is an authentic timber frame building, that features Stutzman’s own fresh seasonal fruits and vegetables as well as locally grown meats and Somerset Coffees. The cafe has a wood-fired brick oven where the Stutzman’s crew prepares raised dough pizza and sandwiches made from their own homemade breads. Soup and salad are always on the menu as well as the many desert items made fresh daily in their bakery. The cafe overlooks the fields where workers can be seen picking the vegetables that will be prepared in the kitchen or sold fresh off their stand.
The Stutzmans participate in the Maine Senior Farmshare Program where low-income seniors get $50 shares of free vegetables each year to help improve their diets. This year, because of federal cutbacks, many seniors were unable to get on the program so the farm is seeking donations to help feed more seniors. The need is great in central Maine where many seniors live well below the poverty line. To donate to the program stop by the stand or send a check to Stutzman’s Farm, 891 Douty Hill Road, Sangerville Maine 04479 or call 564-8596 for more information. All funds collected go directly to the seniors with no administrative costs.

FRESH INGREDIENTS — The Stutzman’s Farm crew prepares raised dough pizza and sandwiches with homemade bread and cooks them in a brick oven at the Meals from the Fields Cafe. Pizza topped with fiddleheads, below, is a favorite.
Each year the Stutzman’s have a fundraiser to raise money for the farmshare program. This year’s festival takes place down by the farm pond on Saturday, July 13 for Stutzman’s Farm’s ninth annual Berry Festival. The meal starts at 5 p.m. and is a traditional BBQ cookout with home baked beans, burgers, and salads. Dessert is strawberry shortcake topped with Stutzman’s Farm’s strawberries.
The music kicks off at 6 p.m. with Sunny and Tracy Stutzman returning to the stage with special bluegrass guests from the Southlands to kick off the evening.
Next up Cliff and Morgan Cameron, fresh from New Orleans, will be whipping up their own personal style of music. Cliff is a jazz pianist with the Navy Band and Morgan plays mandolin, guitar and bass as well as vocals.
A Harmony Hill reunion will be at the festival. The bluegrass/American roots band that is fronted by three music-loving teenagers and their dads, is reunited for the first time in over a year for this special night’s entertainment.
String Field Theory takes the stage next to perform a mix of blues to bluegrass with a liberal amount of Irish, 1960s and original tunes mixed in. The band consists of Sid and Craig Stutzman on guitars, banjo and mandolin. Brian Smith on guitar and bass with Dawn Potter on fiddle.
Tickets are available at the farm stand. All proceeds go to sponsor the Adopt a Senior Program at Stutzman’s Farm to help provide fresh fruits and veggies to qualifying senior citizens. Please call 564-8596 for more information.
