Senior Matters

Senior Matters
by Meg Callaway

Welcome to Senior Matters, a monthly column for and about seniors. Why launch a senior column in Piscataquis County? A quick look at national statistics shows that Maine is the oldest state in the country. We are also the fastest aging state in the union, and Piscataquis is one of our oldest counties. Where better to address issues affecting seniors and feature opportunities for older people to contribute their time, talents, and wisdom to our local communities?

Ten thousand baby boomers are turning 65 every day in our country, and the fastest growing segment of our population is adults over age 85! Today’s seniors are more vital than ever, and their extended life expectancy offers many opportunities to engage in activities that enrich both their own lives and those of others.
Research reveals that social engagement, especially volunteering, enhances and prolongs the lives of older people. Retired seniors can remain integral to their home communities well beyond their working years, and there are many ways for seniors to contribute in meaningful ways here in Piscataquis County. Serving as a companion to a homebound senior, reading to school children, and transporting neighbors to medical appointments are just a few possibilities.
Each month, Senior Matters will spotlight a senior issue. Topics will range from tips on healthy aging to updates on the development of The Commons, a community center to be housed in the historic and renovated Central Hall in downtown Dover-Foxcroft.
We invite readers to offer feedback about this column and to suggest topics for future articles. You may do so by contacting Meg Callaway of the Charlotte White Center at (207) 947-1410 and mcallaway@charlottewhite.org or Lesley Fernow at (207) 992-6822 and lmfernow@rcn.com.
