Local resident Wendy Weiger is planning an exciting adventure this month. She is embarking on a hike on the relatively new American Discovery Trail (ADT). This trail system of 6,800 miles is, according to the ADT website, “a new breed of national trail — part city, part small town, part forest, part mountains, part desert — all in one trail.” It stretches from the east coast at Cape Henlopen State Park in Delaware to Pt. Reyes National Seashore in California.

A number of players from the region earned postseason recognition from the Penobscot Valley Conference. Peyton Grant of Dexter Regional High School is one of five girls named to the Class C First Team.

Rico Portalatin of Milo said weather conditions ahead of the Can-Am Crown International Sled Dog Races had him concerned, but he was relieved and pleased when he encountered the trail conditions while competing in the Willard Jalbert Jr. Can-Am Crown 100.

Pirate Rec of Guilford hosted the 2019 Penquis Rec Basketball League championship games last month. The league includes teams from Greenville, Guilford, Dover-Foxcroft, Milo, Howland, Corinth, Dexter, Corinna, Newport, Hartland, Pittsfield and Etna/Dixmont with over 400 players participating this season.

Penquis Valley High School senior Cymeria Robshaw is the second best girls high school long jumper in New England as she finished in second place at the 32nd annual New England Interscholastic Indoor Track & Field Championships on March 2 at Roxbury Community College’s Reggie Lewis Track & Athletic Center.

The Southern Aroostook girls basketball team returned every starter off last year’s state Class D championship team and it certainly showed on Saturday afternoon, March 2. The experienced Warriors of Dyer Brook reeled off a 14-0 run in the first quarter to build an 11-point lead and pulled away for an impressive 55-30 victory over a hardworking Greenville team while winning a second straight state title for the first time in school history.

There will be plenty of room on the bench for the Greenville High School girls basketball team for Saturday’s 2:05 p.m. state Class D championship game in Bangor against defending champ Southern Aroostook of Dyer Brook. That’s because the Lakers have only eight players on the roster.

Gage Stone’s wrestling postseason didn’t get off to a great start, but it’s on a much higher trajectory these days. The junior from Dexter Regional High School is set to leave Thursday for Providence, Rhode Island, the site of this weekend’s New England interscholastic championships.

For the second year in a row, Dexter Regional High School sophomores Peyton Grant and Avery Herrick were honored for their play during the high school basketball tournament at the Cross Insurance Center in Bangor by being chosen as two of five players on the 2019 Bangor Daily News All-Tourney Team for Class C North.

Two wrestlers from Piscataquis Community High School qualified for the all-state tournament on Feb. 23 at Oxford Hills Comprehensive High School after their performances at the Class B championship the Saturday before. On Feb. 23 senior Zachary Wilson and sophomore Jacob Nadeau represented the Pirates at all-states.

One school record was not enough for Stone to break on Saturday. Stone brought home the championship, an invitation to New Englands and he was honored as the Outstanding Wrestler competition. He had received Outstanding Wrestler recognition at the Class B championships the Saturday prior. Stone, a junior, has had an excellent season and is prepared to take the mats in Providence.

Dexter beat Penobscot Valley twice during the regular season, but even though the Tigers led by eight at halftime of Saturday night, Feb. 23’s Class C North girls basketball championship game, the Howlers were confident that they could come out on top.

In a battle of the Lakers, No. 3 Greenville pulled an upset win over top-seeded Rangeley to come out on top 41-20 for the girls’ D South regional crown at the Augusta Civic Center on Saturday, Feb. 23. The regional title is the first for Greenville since earning top honors in Class D West in 2010.

The Girls AA/A/B North team includes Foxcroft Academy’s Makenzie Beaudry among the 13 players on the roster. The Girls C/D North team includes Kaylee Deering of Dexter Regional High School and Camryn Rolfe of Penquis Valley High School. Trever Richards of Dexter is a Boys Class C/North team selection.

It will be an offensive juggernaut against a stifling defense in Friday’s 7:05 p.m. Class C North schoolgirl semifinal between sixth seed Calais, 19-1, and second seed Dexter, 16-3, at the Cross Insurance Center in Bangor.

Penobscot Valley High School hosted approximately 28 schools and 56 grapplers across eight classes at Maine’s first all-female state wrestling championship. Three Dexter Regional High School Tiger wrestlers took to the mat on Wednesday, Feb. 20 hoping to be a girls state champion -- two met that goal.

The Dexter Tigers play a tenacious, cohesive brand of player-to-player defense. As evidence, if the team had not scored a single point in the second half on Wednesday morning, Feb. 20, the second-seeded Tigers still would have won the game. Coach Jody Grant’s team built a 17-point halftime lead behind its aggressive defense, shutting down No. 7 Fort Fairfield to earn a 47-25 Class C North girls basketball quarterfinal victory at the Cross Insurance Center in Bangor.
