Halle Pelletier scored seven of her game-high 22 points to help fuel a fourth-quarter surge on Feb. 20 as top-seeded Greenville earned its second straight trip to the Class D South girls basketball championship with a 52-33 semifinal win over No. 4 Seacoast Christian Academy of South Berwick at the Augusta Civic Center.

The Maine Association of Basketball Coaches recently announced that three players from the region have been chosen for the 2020 Maine McDonald’s Senior All-Star Games on Saturday, March 7 at Newman Gymnasium on the campus of Husson University.

With the game on the line, Dexter boys basketball coach wants the ball in the hands of Nathan Richards. The senior guard made sure on Feb. 19 that the Tigers didn’t make an early exit from the Class C North tournament. Richards scored eight fourth-quarter points, including some key free throws, to lift No. 2 Dexter to a 39-36 victory over No. 7 Central of Corinth at the Cross Insurance Center in Bangor.

Two Foxcroft Academy relay teams competed in the 2020 Class B Swimming and Diving Championship on Monday, Feb. 17 at Bowdoin College.

Grant got the ball, came off a high screen and took a few quick dribbles before lofting a high shot from the top of the key. The ball bounced twice on the rim, then fell through the net as the horn sounded to lift the second-seeded Tigers to a 38-35 Class C North girls quarterfinal victory over No. 7 Narraguagus of Harrington.

Dexter crowned two individual champions. Justin Wing edged Hainer 2-1 at 145 pounds while Gage Stone decisioned Anthony Mazza of Mountain Valley in Rumford 5-0 in the 160-pound final.

Top-seeded Greenville received a game-high 27 points from senior center Halle Pelletier and cruised to a 59-14 Class D South quarterfinal win over No. 8 North Haven Community School on Monday morning, Feb.  17 at the Augusta Civic Center.

Five Foxcroft Academy boys and one Piscataquis Community High School girl took part in the 2020 Class B indoor track and field championships on Feb. 15 at Bates College.

Feb. 15: All of our trails have been groomed and are in great shape. Unfortunately last night our track truck broke down and appears to be unrepairable for the rest of the season. We will continue to groom with our trail sleds and drags.

This story isn’t specifically about this year’s high school basketball tournament, but it does involve a championship trophy. Not mine, mind you.

Jody Grant’s Dexter club is relentless defensively, allowing just 29.4 points per game against a tough schedule. The Tigers also are patient offensively and have a top-notch point-producer in Grant’s daughter, Peyton.

One number shines beyond all others within the Class C North field this year  — 33.8. That’s the average points allowed by the Dexter Tigers, which should leave coach Peter Murray’s club in good stead as it bids for the team’s first regional title since 2005.

Maine Central Institute of Pittsfield earned a spot in the Class B North boys quarterfinals on Wednesday night with a 75-69 victory over Foxcroft Academy in Pittsfield.

The Houlton Shiretowners earned their way into the Class B North quarterfinals by virtue of a 56-41 victory over Foxcroft Academy on Tuesday night, Feb. 11.

Seventh-seeded Narraguagus High School easily defeated No. 10 Piscataquis Community High School 64-31 Tuesday, Feb. 11 during a Class C North preliminary tournament game to advance to the quarterfinals.

The co-main event provided the biggest surprise of the night when veteran Jesse Erickson of Central Maine Jiu-Jitsu in Auburn upset previously undefeated Josh Harvey -- who is a graduate of Dexter Regional High School -- with a first-round armbar.

Foxcroft Academy junior Logan Martin had a hand in 16 of his team’s 18 points during the 2020 Penobscot Valley Conference/Eastern Maine Indoor Track League Small School Championship on Saturday, Feb. 8 at the University of Maine.
