The 118th Audubon Christmas Bird Count (known as the 2017 Christmas Bird Count) was held in the area on Dec. 20.

Proceeds from the Schoodic Lake Ice Fishing Derby benefit Milo Fire Department charities and events and the 56th annual derby will be held on Saturday and Sunday on Schoodic, Seboeis, Ebeemee and Boyd lakes. For more information, please go to http://www.trcmaine.org/fishingderby.

The following births were recorded recently at Mayo Regional Hospital.

The students of PCES finished the WinterKids Winter Games with a score of 99.31 points, placing 13th among institutions from the state’s 16 counties.

The Center Theatre is accepting registrations for the February Vacation Drama Camp which is being held at the SeDoMoCha School. The camp runs from Feb. 19 through the 23rd, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. with a performance at the Center Theatre the evening of Feb. 23.

On Feb. 2 Piscataquis Community Elementary School seventh- and eighth-graders traded their textbooks for skis. A total of 53 students headed to Big Squaw Mountain for an afternoon of skiing -- many of whom first learned how to ski last year in this program while others were figuring out how to maneuver in ski boots for the first time.

On Jan. 26 a crew and equipment arrived at St. John’s Episcopal Church from J. M. Brown General Contractors of Hermon. Their purpose was to install a new steeple on the church. According to some of the local people, the equipment and the project created a bit of a stir in the village.

The General Federation of Women’s Clubs (GFWC)/Miosac Club will again be conducting its annual Sebec Lake Ice Out Contest in 2018. Tickets may be purchased from any club member from Feb. 15 through March 31.

“Neither Wolf Nor Dog” will be at the Center Theatre on East Main Street in Dover-Foxcroft at 2 and 7 p.m. on Feb. 10 and Sunday, Feb. 11 and 7 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 12.

The January meeting of AARP’s Coffee Talk at The Mill in Dover-Foxcroft hosted speaker Beth Ranagan, president of NAMI Piscataquis County. The presentation focused on mental health programs available to area residents through NAMI Maine and the local affiliate.

Dover-Foxcroft Fire Chief Joseph Guyotte met with Sen. Paul Davis, R-Sangeville and Rep. Norm Higgins, I-Dover-Foxcroft at a Legislative breakfast in Augusta on Feb. 1.

Mayo Regional Hospital organized and hosted an Emergency Medical Services (EMS) conference and training program on Jan. 27 on the hospital campus. The conference was a collaboration between the Mayo EMS Service, the Kiwanis Pediatric Trauma Service (KPTI) at Tufts Medical Center in Boston and the Kiwanis Club of Dover-Foxcroft.

We’ve made it to February, the time when winter starts to wear on even the hardiest of Mainers. While this month is known for Valentine’s Day, the Thompson Free Library in Dover-Foxcroft is headed in different directions, focusing on amnesty, science and technology and, most importantly, the zen of Nerf.

True Textiles recently donated hundreds of binders to Piscataquis Community High School of Guilford and members of the senior class helped unload the rather hefty amount of boxes.
