Summer calendar of events

Fourth of July events are scheduled for Dexter, Greenville/Rockwood and Sebec.

The Center Theatre has announced the schedule for the 2017 Maine Whoopie Pie Festival being held on Saturday, June 24 in downtown Dover-Foxcroft. The festival opens at 10 a.m. and runs until 4 p.m. with bakers from across the state sharing Maine’s official state treat with over 8,000 whoopie pie fans. Window Dressers may sound like a home decorating business, but it is a volunteer-powered organization that builds low-cost window inserts to help keep people warm and save money on heating bills during Maine winters.

On Monday, June 19 please join the Piscataquis County Economic Development Council (PCEDC) for our summer quarterly meeting at the newly completed Appalachian Mountain Club (AMC) Medawisla Lodge located northeast of Greenville.

Having trouble harvesting a small amount of hay for your few animals? Ever wonder how people mowed, raked, gathered and stored grasses before modern fossil-fuel run equipment? Saturday morning June 10, Dexter Dover Area Towns in Transition (DDATT) will sponsor a small-scale haymaking workshop to demonstrate simple hand tools that run on whatever you had for breakfast, as well as a small gasoline powered sickle bar mower.

The Center Theatre and the Slightly Off-Center Players announce auditions for the upcoming production of “Nunsense” written by Dan Goggin. This hilarious production is being performed by an all-female cast, ranging in ages from the late teens to seniors.

The Milo Events Committee invites the public to join a day of fun and festivities with the annual Black Fly Festival on Saturday, June 3. The theme this year is “Remembering the 50s.”

We’ve arrived at the crossroads of summer at the Thompson Free Library. So many possibilities, so many opportunities for all ages -- patrons and the public -- to have fun, learn something new and engage with their community.

Have you been dreaming about adding a pond to your property? Perhaps you would like a place to stock trout, enjoy wildlife, to take a dip on a hot summer day or even have a water source for agricultural needs. If a pond is what you desire then join the staff of the Somerset and Piscataquis County Soil and Water Conservation Districts for a pond construction and maintenance workshop on Friday, June 9.

March for Babies 2017 will take place on Sunday, May 21 at Mayo Regional Hospital. Registration starts at 12:30 p.m. for the 3-mile walk. The March for Babies is the March of Dimes’ largest fundraiser, supporting programs that help moms have healthy, full-term pregnancies and healthy babies.

Last weekend was the opening of “Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella” at the Center Theatre. By all accounts it is a magical performance for the whole family. Over 250 people attended the performance on opening night and according to Patrick Myers, the Center Theatre’s executive Director, they were enchanted.
