When I started work for the IFW in the mid-1980s, we were having a peak in fishing activity. Angler use was at an all-time high and I used to cringe on the Monday of the Memorial Day weekend to see the steady stream of traffic heading south all loaded with fish from my favorite trout ponds (in my mind anyway).

Monday I was running errands, getting ready for a business trip to Hancock and Washington counties. I filled my car gas tank, deposited a check at the bank. The last item on my list? Haircut.

Members of Pirate Rec accepted a donation from the Abner Wade Lodge #207 A.F. & A.M. to help with the construction of the Sangerville Veterans Memorial Park project in Sangerville.

This year, the Milo Board of Selectmen believe the proposed budget deserves a NO vote on June 29th.

The new Dover-Foxcroft Area Food Cupboard (DFAFC) consists of Bowerbank, Garland, Atkinson, Sebec, Willimantic, Sangerville, and Dover-Foxcroft and has been in existence for two years. We want to thank both the Congregational Church and the Town Office of Dover-Foxcroft for giving us storage space for our food items. These locations have allowed us to distribute food bimonthly.

On June 10 at the Foxcroft Golf Club over 70 area golfers teed off to benefit Pine Tree Hospice. This year’s tournament was co-sponsored by Kimball Insurance of Sangerville.

On June 15 the Piscataquis County Soil and Water Conservation District (PCSWCD) presented Heather Doherty with its 2017 Outstanding Conservation Educator of the Year honor at a Piscataquis Community Secondary School awards ceremony.

After Arctic charr became perilously close to disappearing from one of the last remaining ponds in Maine, actions by the Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife (IFW) have restored the charr population in Big Reed Pond in northern Piscataquis County.

This is the time of year when Maine’s whitetail deer population begins to recover from a long hard winter. After surviving on reserve fats, twigs and lichen, and whatever else they can find in their wintering areas, the spring “greenup” is the deer’s salvation.
