My family spent the first week in August on Moosehead lake in the Rockwood area. Our 13 year old cocker spaniel Zelda accompanied us although we’d observed a noticeable decline in her health in the weeks leading up to our Moosehead vacation. This decline continued while in Rockwood to the point where we needed to get her to a veterinarian.

As you all know my brother Allan Snyder was laid to rest Saturday, July 22. He was a decorated war veteran and past fire chief with both the U.S. Air Force and the Dover-Foxcroft Fire Department.

The Introduction to Low Impact Forestry workshop will be held on Thursday, Aug. 31 with a rain date of Friday, Sept. 1. The workshop is designed for stewards of small or large woodlots who are interested in safely developing a set of skills to cut and harvest wood products in an ecologically sound tradition. This workshop is intended to bring participants up to speed on low impact forestry principles and practices.

Two businesses are coming together to help raise money for the homeless pets at the Bangor Humane Society. Russ Maynard of Blackstream Custom Cycles in Hermon is partnering with Dysart’s Restaurant on Broadway in Bangor to organize a charity motorcycle ride and concert for the shelter with proceeds benefiting the agency’s annual Paws on Parade event.

Partners for Peace, the domestic violence resource center formerly known as the Spruce Run-Womancare Alliance, will host an open house and barbecue at the Dover-Foxcroft office located at 8 Mechanic Street on Friday, Aug. 18 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in celebration of the organization’s recent name change.

Vanity Fare went with "anti-diversity manifesto." “It” was the controversial memo drafted by a Google employee, criticizing the company’s internal policies on bias and diversity. A memo that got him fired.

Lightning flashed in the distance and rain began to fall, each drop forming a tiny bubble on the surface of Moosehead Lake. We’d watched the dark clouds gather during our short paddle, and with a few words, we agreed it was time for us to turn our kayaks around and get back to Seboomook Wilderness Campground, where we were staying.
