After driving up and over a few hills, around a few turns, the young forest opens ahead and the white steepled Washburn-Norlands Living History Center Meeting House appears. The closer we get we see how badly the Meeting House needs painting. From steeple top to skirtboard, window frames, doors, exterior decorations — the last applied coat of white paint is cracking, peeling, or missing. Patches of gray sun-bleached clapboard are everywhere.

High school football has followed the path of the professional and collegiate versions of the game, with wide-open offenses that spread out the defenses now often more the norm than the exception these days. But the Dexter Tigers showed Saturday afternoon, Sept. 8 that the basics of the game -- blocking and tackling -- remain just as important to success during their 29-0 LTC Class D victory over Washington Academy of East Machias at Tiger Field.

The Spotted Cat Winery is a wonderfully discoverable gem in the Greenville area; it is a small home-based farm winery specializing in natural and handcrafted wines, according to their brochure. This place is named for their cat, Aphrodite, who presides regally over her two diligent humans who grow the fruits and tend the tanks to create the varieties of small-batch wines they produce every year.

The steamboat Katahdin, historic flagship for the Moosehead Marine Museum, is back to plying the waters of Moosehead Lake after engine failure on July 20 led to her being out of commission. Her engines have been replaced and she began her regular cruising schedule on Friday, September 7.

This fall Mayo Regional Hospital, in collaboration with the Dartmouth-Hitchcock health system, based in Lebanon, New Hampshire, will begin offering TeleEmergency services to its patients, keeping quality health services close to home and increasing access to highly specialized care.

It seems like everybody is writing a book these days. And there is nothing wrong with that – especially if you like to read. Fact is that most mature human beings who have lived life, shared adventures or just a canoe or a campfire, have tales worthy of ink. The trick, of course, is knowing which memories or recollections are worth dredging up and then figuring out how to present them in a compelling or entertaining way.

The Good Shepherd Food Truck came to Milo Aug. 29, arriving at the Three Rivers Kiwanis Headquarters parking lot to hand out food. Members of Three Rivers Kiwanis, Bobby and Tanya Ellison, Marie Witham and Kurt Cattan, were on hand to help.

Recently I had the pleasure of accompanying Senate District 4 candidate Sue Mackey Andrews while she visited homes in the Milo area. We encountered many people, some doing quite well while others faced various issues.

There’s nothing quite like sipping a cold craft beer, enjoying a soft homemade pretzel and watching goats play.

The Center Theatre will be hosting the grand finale of its Central Maine Talent Search program at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 15. The fourth event in the series will bring the two winners from each of the previous three events together to compete for $500 and other prizes.
