With the orange stand-up paddle board under my right arm, my swim gear and paddle in my left hand and under my left arm, I walk down the weathered wood steps to the sandy beach. It’s a short hop to the water’s edge. I step in, ankle deep, lowering the SUP board onto Bear Pond.

A company that spent years trying to bring two resorts, 1,000 second home lots, a golf course and other tourist attractions to the Moosehead Lake region appears to have finally given up on those efforts amid economic challenges that started with the Great Recession.

On Monday, the United Nations held its 2019 UN Climate Action Summit, which was intended to push the world into advancing "climate action" on greenhouse gas emissions. It featured government officials, speakers, activists, intellectuals and academics, and of course plenty of scientists.

Traditionally in Maine, the two big fall hunts have been partridge in October and deer in November. That still may be the case, but with so many wild turkeys roaming the Maine woods fall hunters looking for some added hunt challenges might want to give fall turkeys a go. As most sportsmen and back country roamers have begun to realize, turkeys are thriving everywhere in Maine with a staying power that even amazes wildlife biologists.

On Monday, Sept. 23 I received an email from the Piscataquis Observer which contained “1-Minute Hike” by Aislinn Sarnacki. I am a huge fan of Aislinn’s column and on Wednesday, Sept. 25, I hiked the Shaw Mountain trail which was her subject on the 23rd. I had a wonderful hike and her detailed explanations of the trail, which I had printed and carried in my pack, made navigation easy.

On Thursday, Oct. 10 from 10 until 11:30 a.m. the Dexter Age-Friendly Community Committee will hold its first "Tea Talks" session at the "Gathering 4 Main Street" community center at 4 Main Street.

The flower urn was presented to the town in 1929 in memory of the G.A.R. Restored by Tina Santos of Dexter it has stood at the foot of Dexter’s Civil War monument for 90 years.
