Anglers looking for a day of fun on a beautiful Maine lake may want to head to the Milo/Brownville area this weekend, as the venerable Schoodic Lake Ice Fishing Derby returns for its 58th edition.

Word this week of a campaign to block use of ranked-choice voting in Maine's 2020 Presidential election, and to instead allow the people of Maine to vote on repealing RCV, is warm news on a cold winter day.

A few weeks ago, I wrote about the lake trout population and what it took to get it under control. Of course, the main goal of thinning the small lake trout down was to improve growth for all our gamefish. Lake trout, salmon, and to a lesser extent, brook trout all feed on smelt. The small lake trout were so abundant that they were eating us out of house and home and all the gamefish suffered.

The Foxcroft Academy girls picked up 29 points to place eighth among 10 teams at  the 2020 Penobscot Valley Conference Swimming and Diving Championships on Feb. 8 at the University of Maine. The Ponies finished just ahead of the 28 points for George Stevens Academy of Blue Hill and the six points for 10th-place Searsport District High School.
