Northern Light Health observes Breast Cancer Awareness Month

BREWER – Starting at age 40, women can schedule a screening mammogram without a referral. Screening mammograms save lives by finding breast cancer early when it is much easier to treat. Using leading-edge 3D technology, Northern Light Health’s specially trained mammography technologists strive to ensure the breast screening experience is as comfortable as possible.

To increase exposure for Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Northern Light Health is going pink in October! Many staff will wear pink on Fridays, pink lights will brighten hospitals and care centers across the state, in support of patients who face breast cancer and a reminder to take an active role in breast health.

To improve access to mammograms in rural areas, Northern Light Health’s mobile mammography unit is offering walk-in appointments in locations including Baileyville, Bangor, Gorham, Porter, Windham, Sangerville and Greenville. Individuals in need of support to help cover the cost of a mammogram can ask for financial assistance information when scheduling.

About 1 in 8 women (13%) will develop breast cancer in their lifetime. Maintaining a healthy weight, limiting alcohol and exercising regularly can help lower risk. According to the American Cancer Society, breast cancer death rates have dropped by more than 40% (overall decline of 44% since 1989) due to better screening, early detection, and improved treatments. Talk to friends and family about scheduling their annual screening mammogram online today at northernlighthealth.org/ScheduleaMammogram. Scheduling is easy and just takes a few minutes. Mobile mammography appointments are available, call 207-564-4353 with questions or to schedule in advance.
