Tatko joins Malone Family Land Preservation Foundation as Northeast Region VP
PORTLAND — The Malone Family Land Preservation Foundation and the Appalachian Mountain Club announced that Steve Tatko will join The Malone Family Land Preservation Foundation as vice president of the Northeast Region, following nearly 15 years of conservation, forestry, land management and outdoor recreation work with AMC.
Tatko most recently served as vice president of Land and Conservation at AMC, where he was instrumental in advancing the organization’s Maine Woods Initiative and its efforts to conserve, steward and provide public access to large working landscapes in Maine.
A native of Maine and a licensed forester, Tatko has extensive experience bringing together conservation, sustainable forestry, wildlife habitat, recreation and the needs of local communities. His work has focused on the long-term stewardship of working forest landscapes and the protection of the ecological and recreational values they provide.
“We are extremely happy to have Steve join the Foundation,” Rye Austin, CEO of The Malone Family Land Preservation Foundation, said. “Steve has spent his career working to conserve and responsibly manage some of the most important landscapes in the Northeast. His deep roots in the region, his understanding of working forests and his experience bringing conservation and community interests together make him an exceptional addition to our team. His appointment reflects our long-term commitment to the Northeast and to responsible stewardship of the lands we are working to preserve.”
“Steve’s impact on AMC will be felt for generations to come,” Nicole Zussman, president and CEO of the Appalachian Mountain Club, said. “Over the past 14 years, he has helped shape and strengthen AMC’s conservation work, from advancing innovative land protection and restoration efforts to growing the Maine Woods Initiative into a nationally recognized model for conservation that protects critical landscapes while creating more opportunities for people to connect with the outdoors. We are deeply grateful for his leadership, expertise, and unwavering commitment to our mission, and we wish him every success in this next chapter.”
“I’m thrilled to be joining The Malone Family Land Preservation Foundation and support its mission of responsible stewardship of forestland throughout the Northeast. The forests and watersheds of this region support some of the most ecologically intact landscapes in the US. Their health and vitality are directly connected to the wellbeing of people, their communities, and the economy. As a Mainer and a forester, I’m humbled to be a part of this work,” Tatko said.
In his new role, Tatko will lead The Malone Family Land Preservation Foundation’s land conservation and stewardship efforts throughout Maine and the broader Northeast. His work will build on the foundation’s growing commitment to preserving large, connected landscapes while supporting responsible forest management, wildlife habitat, watershed protection, recreation and rural communities.
