Unidentified body found on Katahdin

An unidentified person was found dead on Katahdin on Sept. 14, according to the Maine medical examiner’s office.

The body was taken to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner for an autopsy, spokesperson Lindsey Chasteen told the Bangor Daily News on Sept. 18. The cause and manner of death are pending further studies.

The office is working to identify the person, Chasteen said.

Baxter State Park has not released any information about the death on Maine’s highest mountain. Director Kevin Adam is out of the office and did not respond to a phone call or email asking for comment.

Employees at the park’s office are not authorized to answer questions from news organizations, a person who answered the phone said.

Maine State Police and the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife were both unaware of the death, their respective spokespersons told the BDN.
