GIULFORD — A Guilford man is in police custody after a Sunday evening assault in the town that left a man dead and a woman in critical condition.

The Piscataquis County Sheriff’s Office was called to 24 Pine St. at about 7:20 p.m. for a wellbeing check and quickly found two seriously injured people, a man and a woman, at a neighboring residence at 26 Pine St., Maine State Police said on Monday.

The man and woman were taken to a hospital where the man died from his injuries. He was taken to the state medical examiner’s office for an autopsy to determine the cause and manner of his death. The woman remains in critical condition, according to state police.

Based on an initial investigation, the Penobscot County Sheriff’s Office arrested Ryan Carleton, 49, of Guilford, on a charge of aggravated assault. He is being held at the Piscataquis County Jail.

Maine State Police said Carleton’s charges will be elevated pending an arraignment at 11:45 a.m. Tuesday, at the Piscataquis County Judicial Center.

The attack is believed to have been an isolated incident with no ongoing risk to the public.

Maine State Police are asking anyone with information related to the case to contact the Maine State Police at 207-973-3700, ext. 9, and ask to speak with Det. Jacob Ferland.
