RSU 68 can take advantage of state funding for HVAC upgrade
To the Editor;
I would like to take a moment to inform the community about an important infrastructure investment that we hope will take place at 572 Bangor Road, Dover-Foxcroft. The HVAC system in this facility could be replaced through a Revolving Renovation Grant program, which offers a highly cost-effective way to complete necessary upgrades.
A major reason for this project is that the existing mechanical ventilation system in the building is no longer functioning well — especially in rooms regularly occupied by students. Proper ventilation is critical to ensuring safe indoor air quality, comfort and a healthy learning environment. Addressing this issue is a top priority for the well-being of students and staff.
The total cost of the HVAC project is $1.09 million. Through the RRG, the state will cover 67 percent of the eligible project cost. That leaves 33 percent — or approximately $330,000 — to be paid by local taxpayers. This amount will be paid back by the district over a 10-year period with no interest, amounting to about $33,000 per year. This structure significantly reduces the financial burden on the district and local taxpayers.
It’s important to note that the portion of the building used for the central office is not eligible for grant funding. Approximately 16 percent of the total cost — around $127,000 — falls into this category. This expense will not be covered by the state grant, but it has already been accounted for in the district’s current budget.
To move forward with this project and formally accept the grant funds, there will be a referendum vote held on June 10 at each polling station within RSU 68, which includes the towns of Charleston, Dover-Foxcroft, Monson and Sebec. We encourage all community members to participate in this important vote. Your support will help ensure we can move ahead with this much-needed renovation while taking full advantage of the available state funding.
This investment is essential to maintain a healthy, safe and energy-efficient environment for staff and students. We appreciate the community’s continued support in making these necessary improvements possible.
