NATIONAL JAMBOREE ATTENDEES — Alex Shaffer of Sebec and Adam Stetson of Brownville, both members of Boy Scout Troop 100 in Dover-Foxcroft, are pictured at the Katahdin Area Council office in Orono upon their return from the 2013 National Scout Jamboree held at the Bechtel Summit Scout Reserve in West Virginia.

Shaffer and Stetson were part of the Katahdin Area Council’s contingent attending the event. At the event, they joined 30,000 Scouts, 6,200 staff and volunteers and 16,000 visitors from 18 different countries, in kicking off the inaugural event at the new Summit Center. While at the jamboree, the Scouts participated in many different types of events including white water rafting, highland games, mountain biking, zip lines, worked on a variety of merit badges and saw many interesting and unusual sights.
Acknowledging the hospitality of the people of West Virginia, the Scouts, in their role as Messengers of Peace, performed over 148,000 hours of service to the local communities around the Summit Center. Besides meeting fellow Scouts and Scouters from around the globe, the Scouts had a chance to meet with such notables as Eagle Scout Mike Rowe from the TV show “Dirty Job, Michael “Hitch” Henderson from the TV show “Are you tougher than a Boy Scout?” and King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden. In addition to the adventures at the summit, the boys also camped out at West Point and spent an evening at Hershey Park in Pennsylvania. A great experience for all.
In order to defray the cost of their trip, the Scouts will be conducting several can drives from now until December. To help, bring returnable cans and bottles to either the Dover Redemption Center or the Three Rivers Redemption Center in Milo, specifying Troop 100. Anyone wishing to have cans/bottles picked up or to help out directly, can call Scoutmaster Charles Shaffer at 564-4951.
Troop 100, open to boys 11 to 18 and chartered to the Kiwanis Club of Dover-Foxcroft, meets Sundays at 5 p.m. in Diver-Foxcroft. Please call Shaffer for more information
