Dog dies in Dexter fire

By Christopher Burns, Bangor Daily News Staff

DEXTER — A dog died in a Dexter house fire on Saturday afternoon.

The fire broke out in a second-floor bedroom of a Line Road home about 2:37 p.m., according to Maj. Aaron Turcotte, a spokesperson for the Maine Department of Public Safety.

When they arrived, firefighters contained the flames to the bedroom, though the home sustained smoke damage, Turcotte said Monday morning.

The homeowner, a 40-year-old woman, escaped the flames but was taken to Northern Light Sebasticook Valley Hospital in Pittsfield for treatment of smoke inhalation and unspecified injuries not considered life-threatening.

A dog died in the fire, according to Turcotte.

Investigators believe improperly discarded smoking materials sparked the blaze, which was ruled accidental.
