Veteran resources available through AARP

To the Editor;

As veterans continue to face challenges related to health, connection and well-being, it is important they know that AARP is in their corner with free resources designed to support them and their families.

A recent AARP report found that 38% of U.S. veterans age 45 and older are lonely — more than 4.8 million people nationwide. The study also found that many veterans have fewer friends than they did five years ago and wish they were more socially connected. These findings underscore the need for practical tools that help veterans access care, build connections, and remain engaged in their communities.

One such resource is a new free tool from AARP’s Veterans and Military Families initiative. Through Health.Vet, veterans can enter their ZIP code and receive a personalized report identifying nearby eligible VA community care providers, helping them find care closer to home without lengthy travel.

AARP also recently partnered with Dogs Inc. to offer a free dog-training video series for veterans, military families, caregivers and pet owners. The program provides practical training tips that can strengthen the bond between people and their dogs while promoting routine, companionship and connection.

Veterans in Maine can find information, benefits, programs and support through the AARP Maine Online Veterans Resource Guide at aarp.org/veteransME, a convenient one-stop resource. In honor of America’s 250th birthday, AARP Maine volunteers and friends also wrote 250 letters for veterans traveling with Honor Flight Maine, helping ensure each participant receives a heartfelt message of thanks for their service.

Veterans have served our country with dedication. Ensuring they have access to care, companionship, and trusted resources is one way we can serve them in return.
