Shahin earns car seat safety designation for adaptive transportation

DOVER-FOXCROFT — Child passenger safety technician Maged Shahin, an EMT at Northern Light Mayo Hospital and a medical assistant at Northern Light CA Dean Hospital, recently completed Safe Travel for All Children training, gaining specialized knowledge in the use of adaptive transportation.

STAC training is an enrichment course for certified technicians who want to help families make car rides safer for children with medical, developmental, and behavioral health needs. The training includes classroom lectures, hands-on exercises and a proficiency exam.

“Every child deserves to travel safely,” Shahin said. “This training provided valuable tools and knowledge to help me better support families in keeping every child safe on the road. Ultimately, it’s all about giving families peace of mind.”

According to the Maine Bureau of Highway Safety, more than three out of four children in safety restraints are not properly secured, and some are not restrained at all.

Mayo Hospital offers car seat safety inspections at no cost. Trained technicians will check for recalls and thoroughly evaluate car seats to ensure they are the right size and are installed correctly. The hospital also distributes free car seats to income eligible families through the Bureau of Highway Safety Car Seat Distribution Program. While technicians do not distribute adaptive car seats, they can help families choose the right car seat and assist with installation.
