New youth musical ‘Junior High’ at Center Theatre

DOVER-FOXCROFT – The Center Theatre is thrilled to announce the upcoming opening night and performance schedule for “Junior High”, a new youth musical written and directed by local student Aurora Youngblood. The musical explores the poignant and often humorous challenges of adolescence, friendship, and emotional growth. The highly anticipated production is set to open on Friday, Aug. 21 kicking off a limited run of three performances.

“Junior High” follows a group of students navigating the complex social dynamics of their first year of middle school, dealing with themes of exclusion, the shifting nature of childhood friendships and the first sparks of romantic interest. The production is being produced entirely by kids, except for the work being done by members of the Center Theatre staff. The production features a unique ensemble of “emotions” — including excitement, love, anger, confusion, guilt, jealousy and sadness — who personify the internal struggles of the main characters: Kayia, Lily and Leo.

“We’re thrilled to be working with Aurora Youngblood to make this production a reality on our stage,” Patrick Myers, the Center Theatre’s executive director, said. “Giving youth in our community a chance to express themselves and grow has always been part of our mission, so it is perfect to bring this production to our stage in our 20th anniversary year. With kids 18 and under free, we’re hoping a lot of families will come to the shows.”

Opening night of “Junior High” will be on Friday, Aug. 21 at 7 p.m. There will also be performances at 4 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 22 and Sunday, Aug. 23. Tickets for the performances are $10, and kids 18 and under are free.
