Piscataquis County private island hits the market for $2.2M

By Kathleen O’Brien, Bangor Daily News Staff

A cabin on a nearly 5-acre private island in Piscataquis County is for sale for $2.2 million.

Accessible only by boat or float plane, Porus Island is in a cluster of islands in Pemadumcook Lake, just west of Millinocket. Measuring 29 miles long, the lake is part of a network of other bodies of water, including the Twin Lakes, according to Gina Brunda of Realty of Maine, the listing agent for the property.

The 4.5-acre island holds a four-bedroom, one-bathroom cabin built by the sellers, which offers 1,400 square feet of living space. The main floor holds the living room, kitchen, bathroom and other amenities while a metal spiral staircase leads to a loft area with additional sleeping space.

PORUS ISLAND — Accessible only by boat or float plane, Porus Island sits in Pemadumcook Lake in Piscataquis County. The 4.5-acre private island, which holds a cabin, is for sale for $2.2 million.

The cabin features an all-wood interior with decorative touches, such as cut iron panels on the home’s wraparound front porch and canoe paddles accenting the railings lining the cabin’s loft space.

Outside, the property includes a covered pavilion, outdoor shower, fire pit, multiple docks and plenty of spots to watch the sun rise or set over the lake, or admire Katahdin, which is clearly visible to the north, Brunda said. There’s also a natural sand beach on the island and wooded trails for walking or ATV use.

The property hit the market on June 30 with an asking price of $2.2 million and has already received interest from both Mainers and out-of-state buyers, Brunda said.

The sellers would include the cabin’s furniture, personal property, pontoon boat and other equipment, such as the grill and lawnmower, with “an acceptable offer,” Brunda said.

ISLAND CABIN — The four-bedroom, one-bathroom cabin offers 1,400 square feet of living space. The main floor holds the living room, kitchen, bathroom and other amenities while a metal spiral staircase leads to a loft area with additional sleeping space.

“It’s a turn-key property — you just have to bring your own clothes and food,” Brunda said.

Unlike other off-grid camps, the cabin has an indoor bathroom, though there is a privy near the island’s beach for convenience, Brunda said.

Each room has gas-powered lighting, and the home has multiple hardwired charging stations powered by a generator or solar panels. The woodstove in the living room and ample insulation make the property suitable for year-round living as well.

A public parking area and boat launch off the Golden Road provide access to the island.

The sellers meticulously built the cabin over several years and completed it in 2022. It was designed to be a vacation destination for their multigenerational family, Brunda said.

“Everything was thought out and done to the best,” Brunda said.

The island’s privacy and remoteness makes the cabin ideal for someone looking to enjoy the Maine wilderness with their family while still having amenities like electricity and plumbing.

“It’s the ultimate in seclusion and privacy,” Brunda said. “You can lay on the beach and not see another soul. You can do whatever you want — your island, your rules.”
