Price tag for Greenville community building to be finalized

GREENVILLE — The cost to build the future home of pre-kindergarten and childcare facilities and a community center on the Pritham Avenue school campus will soon be determined.

The YES (Youth, Education and Sports) Building committee has determined the structure size and location on the Greenville Consolidated School campus and the group has been working to come up with a final budget number. The contractor hopes to have price estimates from subcontractors in the near future to present to the Greenville Select Board at its July 15 meeting.

“The guaranteed maximum price will be brought to you,” Town Manager Mike Roy said during a June 17 Select Board meeting. The mid-July session will also include a plan to fund the YES Building.

A figure in the $3 million range has been mentioned previously.

In other business, Matt Stone was appointed to the Moosehead Sanitary District for a nearly yearlong term through next June’s election.

An opening occurred with the passing of longtime Chair Charles Tarsook in the spring.

“We are trying to be very technically savvy,” Moosehead Sanitary District Acting Chair Steve Mason said. “That sanitary district over there is not as simple as people think, it’s not even close to being simple. People flush the toilet and think it goes away.”

The district is trying to get younger people involved, with the current members all at 60-plus. Stone fits the younger criteria, Mason said

“It’s nice to hear strategically that the board’s moving in that direction,” Select Board Chair Geno Murray said. “Hopefully you’re going to be successful doing that because you know as well as I do it’s hard to find people.”

The fire department has been awarded a $3,000 Ed MacDonald Safety Grant from the Maine Municipal Association. This will fund detour signs, barricades and cones that can be shared with the police and public works departments.

“These small grants add up and save taxpayers money,” Roy said. He thanked Fire Chief Sawyer Murray for submitting the application.

“I think the plan is to brand them so we keep them in our position,” Roy said.

An assistant fire chief position, included in the budget approved at town meeting, has been posted internally per policy. If no one applies by the June 30 deadline then the position will be posted externally.
